Greetings!
I'm in dire need of a vacation, was hoping you guys could help me out!
My parents live in DXB so I would like to visit there first before going someplace else for a long overdue vacation!
My haul ->
AA - 140k miles
United - 60k (going to sign up for the sapphire preferred soon)
US Airways - 60k
MR - 50k
Avios - 70k
SPG - 60k
I've never been to Europe :-( and the only place I've spent time in Asia is India and Thailand. I'm can travel anytime in 2014!! (Later is better!)
It's only me, so ideally I would like to use my AA miles to fly in business, and maybe use Avios/United/MR for cheap short haul flights!
Any recommendations?
Thanks

You should also state what sort of vacation you fancy. Do you want to sit on a beach? Go hiking in the mountains? Tour around a big city? Have lots of nightlife or do you want solitude? All if these answers will shape what others can recommend.

hola, I think since I'll be alone I'd like to for a more city like feel. Try to immerse myself in the culture and mix with the locals! Hiking is not bad either! Definitely not a big fan of the beach (I grew up in Dubai) nor do I need a good nightlife at the destination (live in nyc!)

I recently flew on UA:
NYC-IST-MLE-CMB-NRT-NYC
Separate ticket for MLE-CMB
I throw that itinerary out there for ideas, as most people here seem to use DXB for transit to MLE so maybe there are some constructs around it.
Also this year I flew:
NYC-MXP-FCO-DXB-ZHR-NYC - for that I actually had 2 tickets, and some other flights for later...
These are just some food for thought, more just for names of towns that might work out for you - as mentioned it is a big world out there and you have enough points to do what you like with it!

Go via LHR and you will have the best Avios options for sidetrips.
Lisbon, Athens and Istanbul are some of the cheaper (as in daily costs) cities in Europe right now. But they can be too hot and busy in July/August, as is most of Southern Europe..
If you're going July/August, I'd suggest North of the Alps - maybe Munich or Amsterdam. Amsterdam is surely the easiest introduction to Europe if you've never visited before, and a great city any time of year. Nice cycling round about. Munich has great lakes and parks and is not too far from mountains. Avios has some great hotels in these places.
In October it's hard to beat Madrid.
