I'm generally very much against this type of thing, and the one time I took advantage of it, it backfired.

I was travelling with two friends (a couple). We were all in First on a LGA-YYZ flight, which was cancelled just before boarding was due. Rebooking on the next available left them in First and me in Coach. (It was an around the world ticket, and I never bothered seeking compensation for the short flight.) I was mightily p*issed off (at the situation, not at any individual). My friends explained the situation to the Flight Attendant, who agreed to send a Gin and Tonic back to me. Which I then proceeded to knock over, spilling it over my clothes!

Why not trade seats with your friend?
