Northern lights

Hi there
Anyone ever seen the northern lights. Hubby and me would love to see them. We are based in Europe. What is best method, where and what is best time of year? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Northern lights

Go to ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. Fantastic and a fun, unique trip. Think they have been out recently!

Get as far north as you can, pick an area noted for clear skies, then cross your fingers and hope.

I have seen them outside of Fairbanks, Alaska in the US but Sweden should be fine as well.

Northern lights are spectacular LAX-NRT

I have flown LAX-NRT several times round-trip, and the northern lights are spectacular, even though the flight barely hugs the Arctic Circle, so is not truly a flight over the North Pole. Even so, the lights are phenomenal, and I was glued to the window. I do recommend this to you.

Northern lights form at varying distance from magnetic north pole, and since they are high above the ground, you want to be little bit farther from the magnetic pole, especially if you watch them from the plane window. LAX-NRT is probably quite good route to watch them if you sit in the north facing side of the plane. Because the location of the magnetic pole, the northern lights extend further south in North America than in Europe.

Lots of awesome places to watch the Northern lights:
Lofoten islands, Norway
Abisko, Sweden
Ice Hotel, near Kiruna, Sweden
Iceland
Ilulissat, Greenland
North cape, Norway
Faroe islands

All those destinations easily reachable from Europe and not that expensive(except Greenland at only 4 flights/week)

The easiest is to fly to ARN, OSL or CPH and then take a connecting flight to TRS or KRN(which can also be reached by overnight train from ARN, way cheaper and funnier)

look at the aurora forecast maps here. look for places within the green band at activity level 1 or 2 - those places are the most likely to have visible aurorae on any given night.

keep in mind that the aurora is an upper atmosphere phenomenon that is chiefly influenced by solar activity, and cannot be predicted very far in advance. winter is the best time of year (longer nights, and colder air means less lower atmosphere disturbances).
