Need to calculate how much time of my life has been 'up in the air'

Any math wizards out there?

I want to come up with a formula to translate lifetime miles flown to hours spent up in the air. My rough calculation is that my 2.5 million miles flown on UA/CO approximates to over 250 full days of my life in a plane seat. And that does not include time spent on the tarmac!

Seems like your ratio is not far off from my figures inputted from actual flight times: 980K miles translates into 95.5 days. I suppose the ratio of miles:time is slightly higher for someone with lots of long flights.

How fast does the average plane go?

When I assume 500 miles per hour, I get 208 days.

Use FlightMemory.com, it will do all the work for you! Plug in your flight details on a free account, and it will show you a map of everywhere you have been, the total time spent in the air, longest flight, shortest flight, most common aircraft you fly, most popular routes you fly, etc.

This will keep track of your flights.

http://www.flightmemory.com/

See how many of your past flights you can remember.

The ratios will be off for those who fly in Y or C a lot or who are segment elites due to 500 mile minimums.

Depends on what figures you're using -- I would hope common sense would tell you not to use an airline's EQM/RDM figures to run the numbers (although perhaps that is the OP's question...)

My figures above are from flightmemory.com

But a good % of each flight is well below 500 MPH, think takeoff and landing times.

A 2500 mile flight is usually 6 hours. Shorter flights would have a proportionately larger amount of time for takeoff and landing. Probably /400 or /350 would be better. Just depends on the flight mix. That's a lot of radiation.

I used 400mph, accounting for take-off/approach, and came up with about 250. But I suspect anyone with that many miles probably has a decent number from 50-100% matches, 500 mile minimums (even higher way back when), promotions, etc.

If I had to guess, knowing nothing else, I'd say 140 days.
