Chocolate on Pillow
I've stayed in far too many hotels and never figured out, nor ever asked, if one is supposed to eat the chocolate left on pillow before retiring to bed or when waking up. I personally eat it first thing waking up giving me a delicious boost. Seems to me eating chocolate (especially the dark type) right before sleeping will give me an unessesary stimulant keeping me up counting a few more sheep. Plus, I've already brushed my teeth

Well chocolate goes with port, and would you really drink port first thing in the morning? The chocolate is obviously for evening. If they wanted you to have it in the morning, they would sneak in early in the morning before you wake up and leave another piece.

Cary Grant's legacy to the Mayfair is the chocolate on your pillow. The handsome actor started the tradition in the 1950's. He reportedly liad a trail of chocolates from his parlor suite, through the bedroom and finally onto the pillow with a note to his female companion. The Mayfair continued the tradition and it spread to hotels across the country.
I would guess they enjoyed it at night.
