Chocolate on Pillow
I've stayed in far too many hotels and never figured out, nor ever asked, if one is supposed to eat the chocolate left on pillow before retiring to bed or when waking up. I personally eat it first thing waking up giving me a delicious boost. Seems to me eating chocolate (especially the dark type) right before sleeping will give me an unessesary stimulant keeping me up counting a few more sheep. Plus, I've already brushed my teeth :D

I always eat it before bed (and before brushing my teeth). One piece of chocolate has never made me unable to fall asleep

Well chocolate goes with port, and would you really drink port first thing in the morning? The chocolate is obviously for evening. If they wanted you to have it in the morning, they would sneak in early in the morning before you wake up and leave another piece. :D

Cary Grant's legacy to the Mayfair is the chocolate on your pillow. The handsome actor started the tradition in the 1950's. He reportedly liad a trail of chocolates from his parlor suite, through the bedroom and finally onto the pillow with a note to his female companion. The Mayfair continued the tradition and it spread to hotels across the country.
I would guess they enjoyed it at night. :p |
Nice story. I think from a medical perspective chocolate is supposed to help you sleep. Sugar and whatever it is that triggers oxytocin. Just eat it before brushing your teeth.

I never eat the chocolates on the pillow. Some of the prices that hotels charge for those are ridiculous. Just leave it next to the mini-bar (and take a picture to prove you didn't consume it).

I have never been charged for a turndown chocolate - which hotels do? (and I shall take pains to avoid them! Talk about cheaping out!)

They are free at some hotels (where they are marked as "With Our Compliments" or similar), but I have had nasty surprises being charged for them at others.

I'm still waiting for the vegan option. ;-)
|
The dark chocolates often are vegan!

It's clearly supposed to be eaten when you return to the room before working out.

I bring them home with me. I, too, am curious what hotels charge for them. That is rather odd.

On extended stays you could almost save a box full to take home ;) |
