Miles are airline frequent flyer miles. Points are hotel frequent stay points. Both are easy to get with credit card sign up bonuses. Airline miles are easier to get by flying. Hotel points are easier to get by staying in hotels (though sometimes you can request a smaller amount of airline miles credited to an airline frequent flyer program with a hotel stay.)
And welcome to FT.

In addition to the distinction between airline miles and hotel points, there's a useful distinction between "miles" and "points" in the airline context alone.

Traditional, miles-based frequent flyer programs (the kind used by United, American, Delta, US, Alaska, etc.) award miles for flights based on distance flown (regardless of fare paid), and generally also set redemption prices according to distance-related geographic zones (no matter what a paid ticket on the same route would cost).

New-style, points-based frequent flyer programs (the kind used by Southwest, JetBlue, and Virgin America, for example) in the United States are generally pegged to the dollar: you earn points for a flight in some direct and fixed proportion to the fare that you paid for that flight, and award tickets are priced in some direct and fixed proportion to the fare of a cash ticket on that same itinerary.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8530/5.0.0.1030 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/417)

Some airlines use both "miles" and "points" to determine qualification for elite tiers in frequent-flyer programs. For example, AA lets one earn elite status either through elite-qualifying miles, elite-qualifying points, or segments. BA awards elite status based upon acquiring a certain number of tier points (in addition to requiring, I think, at least four flights flown).

A mile is a unit of distance and a point is a location in space. It may be easier to get to a point if it is less than a mile away, than to try to get to a mile.

But really, it depends on the frequent flyer program.

Qantas for example calls the redeemable earnings "points" (which are awarded based on the miles flown by a multiplier depending on class/status) as well as earning "status credits" (which are awarded per flight based on the distance in a certain band and flight class).

Without additional context regarding your travel activities and preferences this is like asking "What is the difference between apples and oranges and which tastes best?"

Here are a couple of links that provide background on the evolution and options for frequent traveler/flyer programs in general:

a lot of points now come from credit card companies, and can be assigned to any one of a number of different ff programs. this is a tremendous advantage. my wife have over 300,000 "orphan" points and we have lost many when a particular service abandons a destination.

I'm a points guy. Always have been. It's in my blood. I can't control it.
