Some airlines use both "miles" and "points" to determine qualification for elite tiers in frequent-flyer programs. For example, AA lets one earn elite status either through elite-qualifying miles, elite-qualifying points, or segments. BA awards elite status based upon acquiring a certain number of tier points (in addition to requiring, I think, at least four flights flown).
