Getting the most value out of a non-refundable ticket that needs changing

I booked myself a flight from BOS to RIC leaving Wed and returning Thu for personal reasons. This has now been turned into a business trip and I need to add a day to my trip. My original ticket was $210, to change the return date through Travelocity is $190 (plus tax I imagine). I don't think I can put in for a $400 expense for a ticket with work when they can just buy a new one for $200ish. Any way to get any value out of my original ticket or am I just out the $210?

What sort of fees are involved if I "miss my flight" and show up the same day of my flight but say 12 hours later?

This is US Airways if that makes a difference.

From what I've been reading, I can't find any way around this. Looks like I'm personally out the $200 which leaves me where I was going to be anyway had this not been a work trip. At least they pick up the hotel and rental. Looked at buying just a one way for return, but of course that was the same price as round trip.

Are you flying JetBlue? I believe they still offer non-stop flights between BOS and RIC. They also sell one-way tickets at non-premium prices over round trip tickets. Being so close to the departure date you likely will not find something too cheap but as you said it is now a business trip and if you are just finding out about it your employer will wind up paying what they would have anyway.

Looks like USAir also flys n/s to RIC.

I'm flying USAir, it's an additional $270 (on top of the $205 I already paid) to change my flight, $190 of that being fees, so that's really not that bad, but now I'm reconsidering and may just pull an all nighter. Take care of my personal business Wed during the day, drive up to our data center in Ashburn (about 120 miles north) and then boogie back down to Richmond to catch my 6:45am flight out on Thursday. My only concern is..... TRAFFIC.

Labor Day - not happening.

Basically, you've got a $210 ticket which will have $150 in change fees associated with it. Best bet is to buy a new ticket and hang onto the $60 credit for use on something else within the year.

Them's the risk of buying non-refundable/changeable tickets.

Yet a new one-way return on Friday is $212. You could buy that, eat the return on your r/t and come out ahead of where you'd be if you changed the flight.

I thought about the 2nd one-way ticket but the difference is I can probably get away with expensing a ticket with a fee for date change, but I can't get away with putting two tickets on an expense report, even if they come out cheaper. Go figure!

If that's what your employer wants, why sweat it? Make the change and pay the fee.
