Renewed US passport, now my unexpired Indian visa gone!!!

So, I had my Indian visa on my US passport which expired in July, so I sent it off to get a new passport. I got back the new US passport, but they did not send back my old one...which means that now I do not have my Indian visa. Has this happened to anyone? What do I do now? Will I have to pay to get a new visa or can they look up records and put in a new visa? Any suggestions would mpbe much appreciated.

Thanks.

D.

Did you tell them that you needed it back? When my passport was renewed they punched a couple of holes in the cover of the old one and sent it back to me. When I go to India both passports go with me.

Probably too late to get it back but you can try.

Good Luck

Ughs. I was under the impression the old passport would be sent back...did not see any place on the form asking me about it.

When did you get your new passport? Your old passport comes back separately, typically a week or so after you get the new one.

In my experience the old passport arrives under separate cover, typically a few days later than the new one.

EDIT: Oops, reuvenh beat me to it.

Both of the previous posters are correct. You will get the old passport back in another mailing.

Thank you for your replies...MII-SBM,Rampo and reuvenh...so relieved to hear this. I got the new passport today...so that means the old one is on its way back then. (sigh of relief).

Yup - rest assured, your old passport will come back to you. The last time I renewed, the old passport came under separate cover about a week later.

(Don't worry - if I hadn't known, I would have stressed, too! I had to pay a lot of money for my Indian visa...certainly wouldn't look forward to having to pay that again if my old one hadn't expired.)

What everyone else said.

I've had times where I've had to submit copies of ALL of my passports (including expired ones) as part of an application for various things. Can't remember what offhand, though. Security clearance and a Russian work visa (which I was denied), I think.

Q:I'm renewing my passport. Do I get the old one back?

a:Yes, we return the old, cancelled passport to you although it may be sent separately from your new passport. It is a good idea to keep it in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship.

Just one caveat. If you get your passport replaced because it is damaged, they do NOT return the old damaged one to you.

I was majorly annoyed because the one they didn't return had some of my coolest entry/exit stamps (from places like British Antarctic Territory, Saint Helena, and Ascension Island).

Each country has its own policies regarding valid visas in expired passports:

[KVS Availability Tool 7.0.3/Diamond - TIMATIC: Country Information: Visa]
Code:
[Visa Information] India (IN)

 Additional Information:
- Valid visas in expired passports are still acceptable,
provided accompanied by a valid passport of the same
  nationality of the expired passport.
- The passport number is recorded on the Person of Indian
Origin (PIO) Card. If the passport has been renewed, it is
required to hold the old passport (the number of which is
recorded on the PIO) and the new passport.
- Holders of multiple entry Tourist Visas (type T), with a
validity ranging from above 3 months and up to 10 years, are
required to have at least 60 days between visits. Those
wishing to re-enter before the 60 days have expired must
contact an Indian mission abroad to obtain permission.
Travelers intending to make side-trips to neighbouring
countries as part of the same journey, should submit details
of their complete itinerary, with supporting documentation,
such as reservations, to an Indian mission or to the
immigration officer upon initial entry into India, to obtain
permission for multiple entries as part of that journey.
The Tourist Visa is non-extendable. Visitors are required to
register with the Foreigner's Regional Registration Office
(FRRO) within 14 days of re-entry.
- Visa exemption does not apply to nationals of Cyprus,
Hungary, Israel, Lao People's Dem. Rep., Russian Fed. and
Tajikistan holding diplomatic or official passport, if
  employed by an international organization.
- Nationals of any country other than Bhutan, Maldives and
Nepal, belonging to a Tourist Group arriving by air for a
stay of a specified period: Travel agency (approved by the
Indian Ministry of Tourism) should obtain prior permission
from the Immigration Officer in charge. The representative
of the local travel agency will be held responsible for
accompanying the group at all times during their stay in
India. Permission to enter the country will be granted only
upon submission of the name of the group, the number of
passengers, details of the itinerary (incl. port of
departure) and passport number, date of birth and
  nationality of each passenger.
- Holders of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registration
certificate (booklet) are issued with a U type visa. It is
not required to carry the OCI booklet. A "U" visa cancels
any other type of visa issued by India. If the passport is
renewed, the OCI "U" type visa issued in the old passport
remains valid; it is required to hold both passports.
- Visa extensions possible, except for "T" (tourist) visas and
