why do we tip waiters/waitresses who make $55000/year, but not flight attendants who make $30000/year(or worse, commuter airline pilots who make less than that)?

Waiters and waitresses deserve tips? I don't tip when I travel internationally. No one tips me for doing my job. They should get a better job. It's a US culture thing.

bla bla bla

A waiter (just plain waiter) who is making 55k in Germany is almost impossible to find.
If the 55k include tips, that`s an other story.

Please don't put the idea out there that yet another occupation needs to be tipped.

she's only paid $2 per hour by the restaurant... that the legal minimum,
as long as there are tips, which add up to more than $55000/year...
(this is before the usual 10% of tips to the chef and 15% to the captain/
hostess, which all waiters/waitresses have to pay up)

that's actually not that much.... still a lot less than what a mail carrier
makes, but definitely better than the flight attendants during the first
few years.

Waitstaff are there to serve you.

FAs are there to keep you safe, especially in case of an emergency. They also sometimes bring you a meal or a drink.

Waiters and Waitresses are a lot less likely to pull the power trip on me and are generally pleasant to be around in relations to flight crew where everyone is a terrorist until proven innocent

Tipping is a funny custom anyways...I think. So do what you think is right for you. whenI travel, I always ask locals, what is customary in their culture, and then follow that. In Rome...

That's a debatable point. In almost 50 years of flying I have yet to see any flight attendant take action in a clear emergency. No emergency landings, no slide deployments, no belly up landings, nothing. But I have observed 50 years of actions that look very similar to the typical wait staff. So to say that they are there to "keep me safe" is only a partial truth. They are there to assist passengers, and to provide a service, often including meal service. Their actual job duties as observed by the amount of time performing them clearly seem to indicate that they have much more in common with wait staff than a "safety professional".

I agree, we should not be tipping waiters. Gratuity/service should be included in the price of the meal and anything extra should be given for awesome & superb service.
