Unhappy On vacation and ill.

I am in Rome and feeling sick. My guess is altitude sickness. Hot, cold, nauseated, sleepy, hungry but not quite able to eat. Last night my chest hurt; today not so much. I have insurance
From the states as well as travellers insurance. Any self help suggestions?

Altitude sick in Rome? I've only heard of altitude sickness in regards to high altitude. Rome is at a pretty low altitude if I recall right.

Some of the symptoms sound serious. The chest pain, in particular. I'd probably ask if the hotel has a doctor they can refer you to, or just go to a hospital.

Altitude sickness in Rome? Where have you been before this trip?

But why post on the internet.... go see a doctor, that's what they are there for

i have had a lot of experience with sick in europe. italy is quite good. they have some form of socialized medicine, and not great pay for medics.contact the front desk. they should "know" a doctor. after he finishes for the day, he will come to your room. you can ask about cost. been a few years in italy, so i would guess over 100, but less than 200 they will give you a receipt. your ins should pay.

even if they don't go see a doctor, get some happy pills and enjoy your vacation

in italy the pharmacist has much more latitude(and much stronger meds) than in usa. if one is convenient, you can go to see one of them. they prescribe and sell cures.

IME not all Roman pharmacists speak enough English to dispense the drugs, if the OP does not speak enough Italian to confidently communicate their symptoms. I had trouble conveying my need for antiseptic, steri stips and band aids, and that was with a gushingly bleeding foot at the time!

I'd suggest an English speaking doctor, 'ordered' through the hotel - although it depends on the insurance company - they often require you to call them before contracting medical services, so they may not cover unless you call them first.
