Crummy flight times and duration vs points?
I know this relates to FF but there doen't seem to be a general (as opposed to a specific shceme) subforum.
I will be going to Sri Lanka in July on a business trip and have a choice of either Emirates or Qatar. The Emirates flights are typically 5 hours longer (as they go via the Maldives or have a longer layover in Dubai) (taking them from around 15 hours to 20+). I don't yet have status with Emirates but am likely to get it by November (due to Emirates flying to most of the places I travel to). Will be flying on an economy nonflex ticket so the points aren''t that high. Should I go for convenience or points (it looks like th eproduct is fairly similar)?
Question is compounded by family coming out to join me and they are likely to go Qatar - husband is happy for us to travel home separately (kids are 11 and 13) but other things being equal would prefer for us all to be together.

You're right that the on-board experiences are similar, though with Emirates you get the benefit of a wide-body aircraft and of connecting in DXB, which is far, far better than connecting in DOH.
