1-way tix, segment pricing: why is this?

I hope this is the correct forum to post and also did some searching before posting this question:

why is a 2-seg tix so much less expensive than simply booking the first seg by itself?

example:
1/30 IND-CLE-ERI on CO #4202 = $139
1/30 IND-CLE SAME FLIGHT #4202 = $591 w/o the ERI seg

This defies logic to me.

Fares are priced based on supply, demand, and competition on the route.

What he said....

Two of my rules in dealing with travel are:

1. Do not look for any relationship between distance flown/number of segments and price.

2. Once an acceptable fare is found and paid for.. STOP LOOKING!

(Note the number of threads here on FT.. "It's cheaper NOW... Waaaahhh!!!")
