I know this may sound unusual for some, but here is the thing. I am planning a little trip to mainland US from Hawaii. I want to go to LA and when I looked at flights, they were about 300 dollars, but then I changed airport to nearby (maybe Burbank or San Diego), there was a flight for 170 dollars, which was connecting at LAX...
so the question is, can I just book this itinerary and just walk out in LAX instead of going to my connecting flight... I mean, i am sure I can walk out, but are they gonna charge me penalties on my credit card or anything like that? Am I going to get on wanted list? I understand I won't be able to check my bags in, right?

Search for hidden city ticketing, there are countless threads about it here. It's one of the most popular questions.
If you miss a connection, and you are flying back to Hawaii, they will cancel the rest of your trip, so you can only cancel the last flight of an itinerary.

It shouldnt't matter in your case... unless you are buying a round trip ticket then you'd be stuck in LA due to the cancellation of the returning flights.

Not only what they said, but the airline is also only obligated to get you from Hawaii to your final destination. So in the case of IRROPS, the airline has the right to reschedule you on a flight that is HNL-SLC-SAN.

Interesting..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_booking_ploys
i had no idea that i was following a wikipedia guide
.
I like it how airlines are trying to play the legal card. Screw them! They tend to price everything backwards and then charge you extra for fuel!
My ticket is going to be one way, as I will be using ground transport, mostly car rental for the rest of the trip, primary because I want to avoid TSA harassment.. I will be flying back to Hawaii from San Fran.
I am sure I will have more questions about airports later on.
BTW, changing the rest of the itinerary is brutal, although not relevant to my case. What if I missed connecting flight not on purpose and took next available from another carrier?

If you missed the connecting flight not on purpose (ie MX/WX) , the airline would book you onto their next available flight.
