Is Flightview a US-centric app?

Hi, like most of you, I'm unhappy at the loss of the Flight Tracker and Flight Board apps.

Just looking for other ones, I note that the Flightview one appears to be only available through the US app store.

Does this mean the app is pretty much US-centric (as in mainly concentrating on US airlines and routes rather than worldwide)?

ericw Mar 2, 2017 7:54 am

Is there any app that has Tripit integration? I've been using Tripit for many years and I like its integration with Concur. I know it has a $49/year pro option to have real time flight alerts, but it is not worth the price imo.

WorldMate has real time flight alerts for $10 a year, but it is quite an adjustment from tripit and I lost all my historical travel records.

Flight+ does

nestorph Mar 2, 2017 8:42 am

FlightView does not integrate with TripIt according to the mobile app

BThumme Mar 2, 2017 11:05 am

Just a heads up, Flight+ just rebranded itself as "The Flight Tracker" - with a logo almost identical to what FlightTrack used to have. App still looks the same and functions the same as Flight+, still not close enough to what FlightTrack was.

ericw Mar 2, 2017 12:37 pm

I cannot find either Flight+ or The Flight Tracker in Play Store. Is it iOS only? What's the name of the developer?

I downloaded App in the Air and I like it in general and it has Tripit Integration. However, I hate the $40 a year subscription for real time alerts.

Airline Flight Status Tracking also has Tripit Sync as an add-on. but the GUI feels cluttered.

Darn, I miss my old Flight Track Pro!

boberonicus Mar 2, 2017 1:33 pm

I am bummed to see that Mobiata's no longer populating the servers with flight info. I fondly remember (more than once) being notified of a delay before the info was posted on the gate monitors or announced by the gate agents. I called the airline, got rebooked, packed up my stuff, walked towards the new gate, and then heard the announcement!

Flight+ now The Flight Tracker's developer is listed as "international airport flight track techno(logies, logy, it gets cut off?), and their website from the iOS store goes to Impala Studios online. Don't know if it's iOS only.
I do see that it does show actual/scheduled departures arrivals now, so that's good. It's live flight map though is completely off.

Anybody tried the $10 Flight Update Pro, from Silverware Software? The app description on iOS positions itself as a direct replacement for FlightTrack Pro, but the reviews are mixed. Would love to know how others are getting on with it.

id be interested too if anyone get this to review. Kind of weird how that never came up in my app searches (and how no one else mentioned it prior)...

edit: just caved and bought it. It just froze when I tried to search my flight...I'll report back in a bit. I also fly tomorrow so can provide something a little more through then.

edit2: tried searching a sample den-lar. Couldn't find LAR. It gave me the option to manual enter it and then...crashes. That's two crashes within a minute on my first two tries using it. now 15 minutes in and I've not been able to figure out how to save a flight I've searched for...

Microwave Mar 2, 2017 11:21 pm

Crap. I was going to give it a go, but I'll skip it for $10 if it is such a crashinator.

I too am completely bummed over the lost of Flight Track.

Flight+ is only available for apple devices at Impala Studios

Looks like Impala has a flight board app too

I am going through the same FlightTrack withdrawal as the rest of the posters here. I feel your pain.

After trying everything shown in this thread I am beginning to settle in on Flight+ (now Flight Tracker).

Do any of you have opinions regarding the timeliness/accuracy of flight update information on this app?

Thanks,
David

I can't seem to find Flight+ in the Apple App Store. I'll be giving FlightView a try on some trips this week.

Flight+ changed its name to try to capitalize on everyone's desire to see FlightTrack Pro come back. It's now called "The Flight Tracker"

is it worth it to pay 3,99 for *The Flight Tracker* ? Does it even have an integration to Tripit ?

I paid it. I don't use Tripit, but it does seem to integrate with it.

BThumme Mar 5, 2017 8:28 am

So after using all these new suggested apps, my recommendation is The Flight Tracker(formerly flight+). Its notifications were pretty much spot on. The only issue I have is that it incorrectly alerts you when the plane lands, saying "plane arrived at H9 at 13:24" when in fact it still needs to taxi to the gate (which then updates again). The flight map in the app however is pointless as it just shows the plane traveling along a great circle route, which the planes don't follow exactly.

i didn't have any delays so didn't get to see how they fare. Please do not pay $9.99 for flight update pro, it's easily the worst of the apps I used. Slow notifications and lots of bugs all around, not to mention looking like it was developed by a 5th grader. It couldn't find the type of airplane I was on (MD-82), and the phone number for American it gave me was definitely not a US phone number. FlightView (free) was average all around, but did have a better flight map.

vincepoy Mar 5, 2017 9:07 am

In the past, I always thought flight24's flightboard was the same as flightboard but only recently when I used it did I notice it doesn't provide any gate information so it serves a different purpose. What's the closest replacement for the Android side for FlightTrack Pro?

bldr1k Mar 5, 2017 5:59 pm

As others have said - FlightTrack 5 was the single most valuable app on my iPhone. I take 200 flights a year and almost every day am searching for flights between cities. Seeing a list of every airline, without codeshares or connections was incredibly valuable. And then being to save the flights offline was also great.

I really don't understand what Expedia is doing - the customer base that uses this app is incredibly valuable.

What difference is there between the paid and free versions? Just no ads?

I've just put my 8 flights into it for the next couple of weeks and the free version so far seems ok (except for the ads).

As for the actual departure and arrival times (and thus, the actual in-flight tracking), at least for the airlines I fly, Flight Tracker Pro were not that accurate, so if I had the need to track in real time, I used the Flightradar 24 app (although that was reliant on the aircraft having a compatible transponder, in my region, some of the older Embraer 190s don't have them).

techie Mar 6, 2017 11:22 am

I was bummed about Flight Track going away from its original mission of tracking flights and switching to trips with v5. More sad about FlightBoard going away. That being said, what is the biggest obstacle that prevents a simple, uncluttered app that lets you put origin + destination + date from being created? 3 data fields and a search button and sounds like there's a market demand for it.

edandolo Mar 6, 2017 12:04 pm

Agree. I never upgraded from FlightTrack 4.5.2. I just noticed this past weekend that while FlightView was chirping away at my gate change, my beloved FlightTrack was mute. It has been lobotomized.

Know what I'm really going to miss? The live wallpaper! I love seeing all of my upcoming flights represented behind my apps and widgets. Why hasn't anyone else come up with something like that?

Djr_Uk Mar 6, 2017 3:31 pm

Hello all,

I also am in mourning over flight track 5. I googled a replacement and came here to all these helpful suggestions.

I have tried App in the air and flight view off previous suggestions on a website. App in the air didnt have a map tracker I found and flight view was just very difficult and awkward to get used to.

Mileways has a useful bit of information such as people on board! but no count down from what i can see to when the plane lands. No flight boards etc

Annoyingly flight+ does not have the app in the UK so im stuck unable to get that...

What i wanted is

- countdown to flight like (1 hour 21 mins till flight)
- a map showing where the plane is (i know it isnt accurate)
- live departure/arrival boards
- useful info about the plane

But it appears that was just flight track 5....I cant believe its gone. Such a daft decision

techie Mar 6, 2017 5:35 pm

Welcome to FT!

Hi, I have just logged into the UK App store (on iTunes) and Flight+ (free version) is currently available. Searched for Flight+ and it comes up as the 39th choice out of 9 512 ... the paid version is available for £3.99 at nr 137 ...

Not sure what the case would be for Android though ...

Cheers ...

Ah found it! Many thanks! What is the difference between free and paid?

Thanks for your welcome techie too!

Hey guys... appreciated the note that FlightBoard and FlightTrack are discontinued along with the refund too. Just got my iTunes card from them.

Cheers.

I have nothing useful to add to this conversation, other than to say I am beside myself with grief (as much as is possible over a smartphone app) that FlightTrack died. One of the most used apps on my phone after email and facebook and internet browser.

Whatever bonehead at Expedia killed this golden goose should be tarred and feathered. That was a loyal direct line for thousands of the world's top frequent travelers!

easyflier Mar 9, 2017 3:15 pm

Haven't found an app that compares. FlightStats doesn't get anywhere close due to delays in updates and the inability to plan an itinerary.

But frequent travelers should switch to the Expedia app! Soon it will have all the functionality of Flight Track Pro, and everyone loves to book via Expedia!

I hate it when a big corporation buys up a great little company and kills it.

I downloaded The Flight Tracker (paid version), and we'll see how it goes. At least I still have TripIt Pro for alerts, so all is not completely lost - but the way Flight Track Pro synced with both TripIt and my iPhone calendar was one of the app's most useful features. I hope The Flight Tracker will fill in Flight Track Pro's shoes, but that's going to be a tough job.

techie Mar 10, 2017 4:35 am

I have to ask: how many people who are not happy about the demise of Flight Track have raise grievances with airline's own apps that they have foregone in favour of FT? Unfortunately, 3rd party apps always carry the risk of being shuttered/acquired, whereas there is a lower probability of airlines going out of business.

True, but I don't want to install airline apps on my phone for airlines I rarely use. What was great about Flight Track Pro is that it worked for all airlines.

Hi, I don't know, I was hoping someone else had paid up to find out ;-).

As far as I can see, neither appear to have close to the same functionality that FlightTrack had, or FlightBoard.

Ah well, just have to get used to dealing with whatever is closest ... PITA

Yup, I paid for Flight+ (now Flight Tracker). As far as I could tell, the only difference was the ads.

Yes, this is a massive PITA and none of the existing products are nearly as good as FlightTrack Pro was (I never made the move to v5, as the original one was better).

I see your point, but how much of an inconvenience is it to remove and reinstall the app when you do use that rare airline? It'd probably take me less than a minute to find and install any airline app.

Issue I have with this is that the airline rarely updates as fast as FlightTrack Pro did. I mean, I got delay notices/gate changes well before it showed up at the actual gate, let alone the respective app.

I hope that you reported this to the airline in question so that they can improve their app.

xvirginx Mar 15, 2017 11:36 am

I gave up with the app. It's info is inconsistent and well, didn't work properly, especially for me who uses LHR quite a bit. . Contacted the app developer who admits they are constantly trying to keep it updated and running smoothly, but can only do so much. They are currently working on improving the app, and also looking at options to improve our flight data and accuracy.

In the meantime, my search continues.
