Google Gears offline Gmail -- how set to require password?
Folks,
I've posted this question in the Gmail Support forum but have not received a reply. I'm hoping that one of you FT tech-types can help solve this problem.
I recently installed the Google Labs app to allow offline use of Gmail. After a lengthy downloading period, my several thousand e-mails and attachments are all nicely synced on my laptop drive, ready for offline use . I've also successfully composed e-mail offline and then sent it later when I had Internet access.
My problem is this -- after installing this app I can't seem to set my Gmail page to require my user name and password before it loads. In this situation, anybody could open up my laptop, double click on the nice, fat Gmail desktop icon, and have full access to my e-mail account. For obvious reasons this makes me very uncomfortable.
I'm using Firefox 3.0.10 as my browser, and have unchecked the "Remember Passwords" box on the Options > Security tab. I can't figure out how the page is getting the feed with my user name and password.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.
Rob

Good question, which I have been wondering myself actually.
As a brute solution outside of the Google Gears itself, I think when you install Firexox you can specify if you want a user-based operation where each user logs in explicitly.
Ditto for Windows obviously, you can set it to lock when the screensaver comes on and then username/password required at access a specific user account on the machine.
