Received an unlock code for the d807 from ATT so that we can use a local SIM card in Italy. Online chat gave us the code and said we would be "asked for it" when we put in the new card. Cannot get it to work.

How do I enter the code with the new SIM card?

Does the phone prompt you with anything? If it prompts you with password or just sits there, try just entering the code. If it ask say incorrect sim, try entering #0111* followed by the code.

On all GSM phones that I've successfully unlocked (about 18 Nokia and Moto), the preferred procedure is to insert a SIM from "another" carrier, power up the phone, and then get prompted for the unlock code/key. After entering the code, a message like "subsidy lifted" or "lock removed" displayes for a few seconds and then a warm restart happens.

No prompt. Will try entering #0111 and then the unlock code.

With the TIM SIM card ("another carrier" in this case - it normally uses ATT), it seems to treat the unlock code as a phone number. Then a message stating "Emergency calls only" or something similar.

It depends on the phone. I have unlocked some phones without using a SIM card from another carrier, while some can only be unlocked with a SIM from another carrier. Find a friend with T-Mobile and borrow their card to unlock your phone.

It's sounding that the phone is already unlocked. Try to make a call with nother sim in the phone. If the phone is locked, it should prompt for the unlock/subsidy code when you turn it on with another carrier's sim in it. Now, some smart phones behave differently. They may not prompt for the unlock code and you have to do it differently. I know my BB 8310 and samsung BJ was like that.

This seems to have worked. After steps 1-8, I turned the phone back on and it uses the TIM SIM card. Was never prompted for the unlock code, however.

Also not asked for unlock code using other methods suggested here. When we bought the SIM card here in Italy, we were told that to call a US number, we did not need the country code. That is not correct. I have my iPhone here (locked) and can call it on the Samsung only by using the 011 prefix.

Next problem: tried sending a text to my iPhone from the (now working) Samsung. Message sent but not received. Do I need the ATT international plan for texting?

No, you do not need texting plan to be able to receive/send text. Something else may be wrong. How are you sure the text actually got sent?

Based only on phone indicating "sending text............. text sent". Although a phone call goes through using the 011 prefix, the text msg has not been received several hours later.

While in other countries, calling the US is usually dialed as 001-AreaCode-7digits or a "+" instead of the 00.

I've never had to dial 011 from outside the US and Canada.

But most of my US speed dial numbers are stored with +1-AreaCode-7digits and work both in the US and from the rest of the world.

I second this. Use "+" then the country code, then the phone number (for a US number, that would be +1 xxx xxx xxxx)
