Does the phone prompt you with anything? If it prompts you with password or just sits there, try just entering the code. If it ask say incorrect sim, try entering #0111* followed by the code.

On all GSM phones that I've successfully unlocked (about 18 Nokia and Moto), the preferred procedure is to insert a SIM from "another" carrier, power up the phone, and then get prompted for the unlock code/key. After entering the code, a message like "subsidy lifted" or "lock removed" displayes for a few seconds and then a warm restart happens.
With the TIM SIM card ("another carrier" in this case - it normally uses ATT), it seems to treat the unlock code as a phone number. Then a message stating "Emergency calls only" or something similar.
