recommendation for bootable CD virus scanning?

My pops' computer apparently has a bad virus. He claims when he boots up it is so slow that he can't do anything with it. Now, I don't have access to the computer to poke around and see what's up, so I thought about recommending a bootable antivirus disk. Any suggestions on what he can buy? He can't even download a virus program he says because the computer is unusable.

Thanks!

Norton, McAfee and NOD Eset are all bootable, I would guess just about all AV programs come with bootable media.

BTW: was just reading 15 Million + computers are expected to be infected this weekend with a pretty nasty virus.

How do you create a bootable image that has the latest virus signature updates?

Hmmm, are you sure that NOD Eset comes with bootable media?

I'm assuming that you're starting with a clean system, as opposed to the OP's father.

You can set up a BartPE disk with the appropriate anti-virus program plug-ins. When Bart boots, it'll set aside an area of RAM as a RAM-disk and you can download the latest updates to there. Or insert a USB drive after the boot, and use it.

If you're starting with a clean system, (or even better a clean install), you can set up a USB thumb drive to boot Windows from. Then it's just like running windows normally. Download the latest updates and scan the HDD, which windows will see as just another drive, not the system drive. Check out USBoot.org.

Can't you boot in "safe mode" and then fix the problem?
