I'm assuming that you're starting with a clean system, as opposed to the OP's father.
You can set up a BartPE disk with the appropriate anti-virus program plug-ins. When Bart boots, it'll set aside an area of RAM as a RAM-disk and you can download the latest updates to there. Or insert a USB drive after the boot, and use it.
If you're starting with a clean system, (or even better a clean install), you can set up a USB thumb drive to boot Windows from. Then it's just like running windows normally. Download the latest updates and scan the HDD, which windows will see as just another drive, not the system drive. Check out
