Avg 8.0

With AVG 8.0 released, does that mean there is no more free version available? Only a 30 day free trial version before having to purchase a subscription.

You won't like AVG 8.0. See the "Bailing on AVG (?)" thread . . .

The Free version of AVG 8.0 is different than AVG internet suite that others have been talking about and paying for.

There are complaints about the free version, too, in that other thread. It's incredibly slow scanning and slowed down my computer so much that I bailed on it.

We talked about the AVG 8.0 A/V only (not the suite) in that thread also. In fact, I tried it. 8.0 A/V only is available in both a paid version and a free version.

Both basically suck.

I installed Avast!'s free version on an older laptop instead of the new AVG. I turned off everything except the antivirus, and it seems to work ok.

I am still mad at Grisoft for ruining a perfectly good product.

You can turn off everything but the AV in the AVG free and it works just like AVG 7.5 IMO.

Keep in mind that $25 of that rebate is only if you can prove previous ownership in a different AV package.

Unfortunately, 7.5 is still slower and a bigger system hog than NOD32. I continue to be well pleased with Eset's antivirus software; the improvement in overall performance is quite noticeable.

Except for the big alert in the system tray icon, besides what others have said. The problem with that alert is that it won't change if something "real" is wrong.

If you're happy with that, by all means, continue to use it.

"proof of previous ownership of a stand-alone, retail (boxed or downloaded) version of any other companys Internet Security software product by furnishing either a copy of the previous product CD, first page of user manual, or your confirmation email from your previous download purchase."

Not too hard to do. I have parlayed such rebates into owning several AV/IS products.
