I like the Neat Receipts scanner. A few things that could be improved: database security, ability to scan multiple receipts / pages to a single entry, ability to easily set where the database should be saved to.

By the way, the Mac version is coming soon. |

As some mentioned here - the neat receipts does not support mac and I looked at the Pentax and the review on amazon said it also does not support mac.
Anyone have a receipt scanner that they can recommend for a mac? |

Neat Receipts demo'd their soon-to-be-released Mac client at MacWorld in Jan. I think it is supposed to be released this spring and has been in beta for a few months now. I bought the current model for Win, run it under Parallels and will be switching to the Mac client once it is released.

Which version are you using? Version 3 is what they are selling now.
By the way, the Mac version is coming soon. You can also control what fields are exported to your expense report like: Vendor, Category, Payment Type (helpful for me to differentiate between corporate CC and Cash as I get a check back for Cash items but can put all on one expense report for the client), Project ID, etc I'm using version 2.7.5 and it just actually told me when I started it today that 2.8.1 is available for download While I'm a bit behind, the one thing I love about this is I can scan in the receipts weekly and print my expense report out to match the billing statement for the company Amex. It even exports QIF which was great before my Quicken was "upgraded" and they removed support for that file type. |
While I couldn't find this at one of the Costco locations near here, I went to a different one yesterday and there it was! Once home, my first discovery upon opening the package was that there is currently no support for 64-bit operating systems. I found the 4-bit scanner driver from the Pkustek web site and it works fine. The NeatReceipts installer, however, won't unpack. So, I tried using my laptop. It works okay, but is there any way to split off items on a receipt and assign them different categories, like reimbursable and non-reimbursable? The software seems to only split out the tax and use the total. I need to spend some more time with it but now that I have it I have to say I'm not wildly impressed.

Syscan TravelScan 464
I got the Syscan TravelScan 464 about a year ago at Fry's Electronics. It was 1/2 as much as the Neat Receipt, and works very well. It scans directly to PDF files. My flatbed scanner is only letter sized, so I use this to scan any legal size document I get. It is USB powered, no separate power supply, which I really like.
I don't really use it for receipts. I've tried scanning receipts that were taped to a piece of paper and that jammed it. I suppose you could scan individual receipts though, but I just don't have a use for that. This goes with me whenever I travel. I jam a lot into my computer bag, so it is definitely durable. |
We've been using one about a year now and it works great to scan receipts for expense reports. The only ones we've found tricky are some of the gas reciepts that are a bit slick. It is very durable - banged around in the laptop for the whole year and no problems with it.

Not sure, but the Neat Receipts unit looks a lot like a re-badged Plustek OpticSlim M12. The Plustek is about half the price and is Twain capable so should be ok for MACS

Neat Receipts uses a Plustek scanner. What you are paying for is their software. I actually have used plustek scanners for years and they are very reliable and durable. I can't speak to the NR software, but any program that scans to PDF (the plustek software suite MAY have this software). I don't use the Plustek suite, just the driver for a Goldmine related application.

I agree with HobokenFlyer, if you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat, buy the cheapest Plustek available, load only the drivers and use the "Create PDF from scanner" option in Adobe and you are done.

Just received an e-mail from NR saying that the new Mac client will be released in late April.
