Not if it is configured correctly. The browser can be set to automatically trust the corporate certificate, in which case (depending on config.) it won't raise a fuss.

Note that network design is one area of computing (along with programming languages) where my knowledge is pretty shaky, but this is what I remember from reading some articles.

Get your own laptop, and use a wireless card (sprint, verizon, etc). It's not perfect but at least it's your personal stuff.

What if you use your own laptop but access a company encrypted wi-fi signal? Is that secure? Just curious...

An encrypted WiFi might protect you from someone outside of your
company network from sniffing the traffic, but it would not stop the company
from monitoring your network/internet usage.

the best would then be a vpn connection through the secure wifi. then they couldn't see you or your traffic at all.

That is IF the company firewall/proxy allows VPN connections.

And if so, the jiwire Hotspot Helper is nice way to go. Your encrypted traffic leaves your workplace, hits jiwire's servers on the Internet, then is sent as cleartext to (in the OP's case) gmail.

certainly, I have run in to this before, but in my experience, here, banks, sand hill, pre-ipo and public companies, I would say less than 2% have been a problem.

True or False?

When using a company laptop, "the man" ahouldn't be able to see what you are doing if:
1) You are NOT connected to the co. network / VPN
2) Keylogging or other monitoring s/w has not been installed on your PC
3) You clear the computer's cache's before connecting to the co. network / VPN

Or what about if I use a Virtual Machine on my work laptop?

I'd love to say "true", but there is so much out there nowadays that monitors what you do that it's hard to be 100% sure.

If you are positive that there is no monitoring software installed AND you clear all the cache, cookies and other personal data then you SHOULD be safe.

Not always true (i.e., it is false under some circumstances as referred to in the remainder of this sentence), especially if you are using an electronic display/monitor and the "proper" monitoring equipment is within range.

Can't say anything for sure.
Also with the new wire-tap rules/regulations/immunities there are
many ways to monitor your activities "legally" even if you are at
home.

I've got a friend who sets up an SSH tunnel from his work computer to his home router, and routes all his IM and web surfing through there.

Do you consider caching the IP addresses of network requests to be monitoring s/w? I imagine that even with Safari Privacy option turned on in Windows Safari you lose control once Safari make a request as it goes through the network driver stack or whatever.

What if

1) Company laptop

2) Work from home (private cable/DSL connection)

3) Connect to VPN for Outlook (work e-mail) access only

4) Disconnect from VPN for web access

What can they know about what was accessed when not connected to the VPN (IE, ect...)
