Slingbox Pro

I just hooked up my new Slingbox Pro to a non HD TV and it works like a charm. (Needed IP address tweaking by a friend who set up my VPN at home). I was in San Diego last night and watched CNN on my laptop to see if I could get it to work on a wireless network when I am out of my house.
The HD connector just showed up so I am going to try to see if I can receive HD.

What a great product! I bought it so when I am in London for example after the pubs close and I am wide awake, I can watch my home TV instead of Bloomberg or CNN reruns all night. You can also get it set up for your PDA and cellphone.

I was on a Jet Blue flight waiting for plane movement so I could watch a football game and my seatmate was watching the game on his PDA/Cellphone. Small picture but it was better than reading the inflight mag.

That does sound cool. I've been waiting to decide if I should muscle one of my friends to let me "sling" into his box and watch when I can when I'm overseas.

Can you download Sling software or do you have to use the CD that comes with the box?

FYI Fairmont Kea Lani is blocking Slingboxes. Tried multiple configurations and could not get it to work over a two week period.

ports

Have you tried changing the port your SB uses?
Try port 5001, or 443. I cannot recall which one got me around all FW or packet filtering systems, I think it was 443. It works everywhere.

I downloaded the software from the website (slingmedia.com).

Several friends and friends of friends who live around the country have set up our own little Sling network where we can watch each other's boxes. Works well, and the quality of the video is surprisingly good.

For our Christmas bonus this year at work, we got to pick either a new video ipod, a portable DVD player, a Tivo, or a Slingbox Pro. I went with the Slingbox Pro.

I had a bit of frustration setting it up with my router, and had to manually configure the port forwarding as the automatic forwarding didn't work. And my CD seemed defective, I had to download the media myself. And registration never did work for me. But I did get it to work before my post-Christmas business trip left.

I was able to watch it from the airport with my Sprint mobile broadband card. The quality isn't that great but it's perfectly watchable. The biggest issue, actually, was hitting the Tivo buttons (since I was watching prerecorded) to fast forward through commercials, there was a good amount of buffering and network lag to factor in. I also watched it a bit from two different hotels. Quite fun!

I have mine set up on my new MacBook Pro and this morning I received a message that there is a new firmware update to download. I was told by a friend who is testing it, there is an error in the software that prevents the download. More to report later.

well

Well, there WAS A time bomb on the .144 software, and FW. One needs to either roll back the clock on the machine, and run the updater, or run the updater from a pc, or uniinstall, and install the new .145.

pm if you need more help.

Slingbox Pro is a great product. I bought one a few weeks ago but had to wait for the HD connector. I finally got it hooked up on Christmas and it works awesome. I used it for the first time on my trip to Vegas a few days ago. I got it based on the recommendation from a friend. He liked my picture so well, he upgraded his regular Slingbox to the Pro. This is a must have for anyone that travels for anything length of time.

Thanks for your help! I backed the system date to 12/31/06 and dl'd the update and installed. Works great! I will set up my HDTV after USC wins the Rose Bowl today!
