Old Hardware
I am in the process of getting rid of some old laptops and PCs.
How do people figure out a fair market price for this equipment? I have gone to eBay to see what people are willing to bid on laptops - is that the best way?

The stuff I have is over 5 years old - not very fast. RAM is around 128K, fastest machine is a P1. I am not sure it is even worth the cost of shipping stuff - but just trying to avoid stuff going to the dump.
My son suggested I give the stuff to his scout pack - might be the best easiest thing.

Ebay. There's no real market for old computers except there.
Considering that P3 machines (box, mobo, ram, disk) are listed in ads for $100, though, I'd almost say it's not worth trying to shuck anything older than 5 years. Laptops get a bit more respect. Not much more. New laptops are like $700 from Dell, after all.
If you're near a university, maybe you can arrange for a student club to take that stuff in. My school's computers club was trying to build a cluster of Pentium 2s a while back.
Edit: I'd keep a single Pentium laptop around though, since those remain useful if you're willing to learn Linux to build routers and firewalls.

Scouting is an awesome program to support, and heck, if you do donate it to the pack, it should be a tax-deductible donation. So I say, if the cubs can use it, let them.
Scouting has helped me out a ton, ever since I started as a Tiger Cub in AK. Since then I have earned Eagle, and now am involved in OA, flying all over the US.

I have a similar question that fits into this thread (better than starting a new one)...these days is there a place to trade in old hardware for recycling in exchange for cash. My old laptops have problems like the wifi adaptor no longer works or it keeps freezing. Probably not something that would sell on ebay, but could be used for parts. Are there any decent places to exchange them for a few bucks without worrying about financial data or personal data being stolen?
