I think it will be some years till we see a mobile browser capable of surfing all the websites a desktop based browser can visit. But technology is improving (albeit slowly).

I have found that opera gives me a pretty darn good run for the money. Ebay, amazon, ameritrade, banks, gmail, etc.
All are handled. Of course screen real estate is the issue, but operation on those sites is another thing.
too bad I cannot get to work with reader.google.com
