So, ScottC or kanebear, I'd appreciate your when-all-is-said-and-done perspective: based on the facts you've seen, is there any compelling reason at all to upgrade to IE 7 at this point?
I appreciate very much the great quality of support the two of you give in this forum. Thank you. ^ |

I appreciate very much the great quality of support the two of you give in this forum. Thank you. ^ Personally I only ever start IE when I need to use Windowsupdate or OWA. Other than that I prefer Firefox. Don't get me wrong, IE7 is a decent browser, but you can do much better with other browsers. The security problems in MS browsers are quite terrible and if you don't stay on top of every update you may find your PC at risk. |
If you use RSS, check Flock out. If you're primarily an IE6 user, IE7 is a good upgrade although I'd probably wait a while to let the inevitable bugs and flaws shake out a bit and let others 'beta' the product and figure out the interoperability issues if any. NOTHING is more frustrating than having to use some hack workaround when you install an update or new piece of software that breaks something you need/use every day.

That's very helpful, as always. I tend to only keep IE Windows Update and sites that demand IE. I think I'll keep 6, then for those occasional uses, and stick with Firefox otherwise.

IE7 uses much less ram than FF.

There was some previous discussion starting here
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...40&postcount=3 about how hoggy Firefox can be. |
What's the harm in upgrading, especially if you will only use it once in a while? Eventually 6 won't be supported anymore. I use Firefox on one PC and Opera on another. Both are still better than IE7, but I upgraded anyways.

If you go to www.maxthon.com, you will find a multi-tabebd browser that is BETTER than IE7 and free.
The best part of the story (unfortunately its not a joke), is that Maxthon browser is a user interface based on IE6! And Maxthon has been doing for years all the things that are supposedly "innovative" in IE7 - and does far more, to boot. More than Firefox as well. In other words Microsoft was wasted years on IE7 - and hasnt gone anywhere. So if you really find any of these features interesting you are far better off gettting Maxthon than messing around with buggy beta software from Microsoft. |

All depends on the software you use and what you do. Some programs use IE6's rendering engine and IE7 could potentially break those and DOES break some webpages. For the vast majority it'll be fine, they can upgrade easily. For the rest, IE7 will introduce problems that range from mere annoyances to severe. It's just a roll of the dice and since IE is so integrated into Windows, it's not a sure bet that an upgrade will be seamless and painless. |
Now granted I think it's a POS application to begin with, but the Skyteam TravelDesk e-timetable for the PC, which worked just fine until I downloaded IE7 yesterday, now says
This version of TravelDesk is not Internet Explorer 7.0 beta 2 compatible. If you are pleased with the performance of Internet Explorer 7.0 beta 2; please let us know as we review options for version compatibility. |
