CD/CD-R Not Working, Any Help?

Got a Compaq Presario running XP. The CD tray will not open when the button is pressed, and when I bring up the device manager, the drive is nowhere to be found. The drive chain is A, C, D, F, G, H, I (the CD/CD-R was drive E). Any ideas/advice? Thanks.

Could be a bad drive - or loose cable.

1. See if it shows up in the BIOS screen.
2. open up the case -disconnect the "E" drive & connect it using the "F" drive's cables (power & data). If that works, it's either the cable, power or jumper settings (unlikely if it prevously worked w/o intervening changes). If it still doesn't work, get a new drive.

Sometimes you can "re-seat" the drive- by taking it completely out of the computer and then plug it back in- Sometimes with laptops- the individual parts sometimes get a little loose with transporting them.

Good luck- rlb
