A week in Paris...

Needing a mobile, not a phone card...

Which is better...get a card to update the one phone that can go international (T-mobile) or rent a phone there with a prepaid card or...?

Not needed for a lot of calls or international calls, but rather connecting with people in Paris, calling for a car, etc. because we are traveling with handicapped folks.

Thanks.

If your T-Mobile phone is unlocked, you might want to get a Bouygues Carte Nomad SIM. On their website it's 15 (includes 4 of credit), but I'm guessing you could find the same deal in their boutiques or maybe even in general mobile phone stores. You can then buy recharges in various amounts to add to your talk time, and your phone number will be valid for eight months from the date of the last recharge. If your trip is short, use the "Avantage Flash" option which will give you twice as many minutes for half the usual duration (for example, 40 minutes to be used in 15 days instead of 20 minutes/1 month).

Phone advice

Since the phone was purchased from t-Mobile I assume it is locked. I am pretty good with tech things, but phone deals confuse me. I'll check on this though. I assume renting a phone for a week might be signifcantly more.

I believe TMobile will help you unlock the phone after you have been a customer for 3-6 months.

Exactly what model of phone do you have from TMO?

Is your US TMO service prepaid or postpaid/contract?

Instead of renting, you can also try to buy a Virgin Mobile prepaid phone. It costs 79 and is definitely cheaper than renting.

A basic Nokia phone with 10 airtime costs 79.

You need to go to Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysees or at any Phone House store (several around Paris).

Alternatively a Virgin Mobile SIM card cost 25 with 10 min airtime.

They use the Orange network in France, so coverage should not be an issue

Hope this helps

In addition to getting it unlocked, make sure that TMO phone is tri-band (900/1800/1900mhz). Many TMO phones are single-band and don't actually support the GSM networks outside the US.
