Needing a mobile, not a phone card...

Which is better...get a card to update the one phone that can go international (T-mobile) or rent a phone there with a prepaid card or...?

Not needed for a lot of calls or international calls, but rather connecting with people in Paris, calling for a car, etc. because we are traveling with handicapped folks.
