Even the stuff from Radio Shack works fine
[QUOTE=ftweb]I use the Kensington 120 Watt AC/DC Power adapter.

I just went into Radio Shack and bought the DC to AC adaptor that they had:
http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/179/p/1/pt/32/product.asp
It lets me plug in my laptop's regular wall adaptor so no special pins needed. It also lets me charge up USB devices without having to connect my laptop at all --- great since my mobile phone can be chaged through USB.

I don't have the adapter here but looking at their web page it looks like it is (or has been replaced with a newer similar model since the power-to-brick connection looks different), the http://www.targus.com/us/product_det...sp?sku=APD10US
and the tip # is 20

Dell Power Adapter D620

"65-Watt Combination Auto/Air Power Adapter for Select Dell Latitude D-Family Notebooks" It's a decent package, although it's not nearly as slick as the iGo or Kensington units. Also, it looks different from the picture as the brick is larger than the standard AC power cord. Finally, although there seems to be a way to extend the power out to other devices, this requires a mythic extra cord I can't find on Dell's site and if I do find it, you can't use it while the laptop is pulled in.
While we are on the D620 anyone have experience with the 9-cell battery for the D620?
Note: My 6-cell battery *does* get to 80% charge in about an hour with this adapter.
Cheers.

I haven't run it very low yet, but somewhere around 3 hours of heavy use (mostly non-3D games) only ran it down to about 35-40%; with a comparable C640 with two 6-cell batteries, 3 1/2 hours of similar use would have me at 10% across the pair of batteries.

They're different from the T43/X40 tips--both the voltage and physical design of the tip is different.

Xantrex 175
I use the XPower Pocket Inverter 175 from Xantrex. There is no need for purchasing additional tips as you can plug in your regular laptop power cable. It also has a USB power outlet, and can be used in your car through the cigarette lighter socket.
http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/186/p/1/pt/10/product.asp
They also have an inverter with a battery included for when you are sitting on aircraft that don't have the in-seat adapter ( like Air Canada, economy
)
http://www.preparedwithpower.com/portable/
I have not tried it but it looks useful.

Some places to go to see what you need to stay powered...
Most FTers know about SeatGuru for some airlines' cabin configurations, including which seats have electric power and the type of outlet - but they have recently added the very helpful "The Ultimate Guide to In-Seat Laptop Power Ports" as well. SeatGuru includes helpful hints like:
"Will there be enough power for my device (how many watts can it handle)?
Most airplane power systems are limited to approximately 75 Watts of power draw per seat. This means that your new 17" laptop, with the power-hungry processor, might not get enough juice to operate. Sometimes the laptop will know not to charge the battery and will just operate via the power, but other times the laptop won't work at all, or will work for a short period of time before tripping the power circuit. You can try taking your battery out all together, or buy a smaller laptop.

BA 777 Generally cannot be guaranteed to work. Normal mode here is to use seat power with laptop off to charge battery, then run laptop off battery only.
bmi 330 Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Only drawback is the power outlet is basically under your backside, which means that you get a warm sensation from the Kensington adapter nestled against your thigh.
KLM (Privatair) Long Haul 737 As BA. Made worse by the fact that your power supply is also used for the portable video player they give you so you can't charge battery and watch a film at the same time.
CO 757 / 767 OK. 757 across Atlantic offer real 110V and works like a dream. 767 is also fine to charge battery and power laptop at the same time.

Dell Latitude X1?
I have the Dell Latitude X1, which has a small power draw. The Kensington web site indicates shows that two adapters are compatible with the X1 -- the 70 watt and the 120 watt. If you click on product details, the 120 watt model lists "most" Dell models. However, the 70 watt model doesn't list any Dells at all.
There is obviously an inconsistency on Dell's website, so I am hoping that someone with experience can weigh in on this. Will the 70 watt model work?
Many thanks in advance.

The Xantrex connector looks like an Empower connector. But it didn't fit.

I did a little grinding on the connector, and this time it fit on a 777 but it was a very tight fit and I really had to yank to get it out. The Xantrex device got pretty warm, but it worked.

I'm looking for a connector that will let me use the empower plug on planes that will work with either Microsoft's Zune or will accept a regular AC two-prong plug from the United States (as I have a USB charger that plugs into a USA electric outlet). Anyone know of something that'll work?
