3G Data Service
Does anyone in UK or Ireland know what the cost & length of contract is to buy and use a Vodaphone, or similar, 3G card for a laptop? Does it work throughout Europe?

Contract length is almost certainly 12 months regardless of the tariff chosen. On Vodafone, Pre-pay service is only available on 2.5G GPRS and costs GBP4.00 
per MB.
For a Vodafone pay monthly 3G, cost depends on the chosen tariff, list available here. You will need a UK bank account in order to take out a contract.
