Experience using third party printer ink/toner?

I've always stuck with the printer manufacturer's laser toner and ink jet cartridges. However, needing both a new toner/drum for my HP LaserJet and also ink cartridges for my Canon color multi-function, I'm smarting over the costs.

I trust the consensus opinion here and I'm wondering if people have good experience buying remanufactured and/or third party products. If so, which ones?

I've used the prducts at tonerrefillkits.com for years without a problem. I take the old carts from the office we would toss out (as virtually nobody buys them anymore), so the drums are never more then a refill or two old, and just refill them.

They sell a kit for $13 that has a soldering iron with a piece of pipe on the end of it that heats up to cut the hole, a plug to plug the hole once you fill it, and then you just buy the toner.

If tossing out old carts once the drum is no good (usually five or six refills) make sure to open it up and get all the toner from the overflow area too, that's usually full after a few refills.

I too have a Canon (i470D) and after having bought 3rd party ink cartridges (I think from megatoners), my experience is that they seem to clog the inkjets up often. I then have to take the cart out and soak it in rubbing alcohol overnight - it then works well until the next clog.

Speaking of ink carts, at Staples for my HP sometimes they have bundles of the different carts in one package for much less then the individual prices (sometimes the black and photo for less then the photo alone).

I've often times bought the combo pack with two or three, and sold the ones I didnt' need on e-bay.

I tried third party toner for my Minolta, didn't work well at all. I prefer spending $70 on a new toner than spending $15 on a bottle of power that doesn't work.

Speaking of inkjets, I've had decent results with semi-name brand but non-OEM cartridges (Xerox and Pelikan on the Swiss market) on Epson printers for general printing; wouldn't use them for photo prints. For cartridges with a built-in printhead (HP), I've tried refill kits, with terrible results (leaks, cart. empty message, etc.).

As for lasers, my Kyocera Ecosys only takes toner, the drum is good for the life of the printer ^
