DVD software

I have a second Dell laptop and for the first time, went to play a DVD in it - it has a DVD drive, but there's no DVD software to properly read them - I did some searches but afraid to download whatever. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Don't know about freeware/shareware, but for payware I have used Cyberlink's PowerDVD for years and have no complaints what so ever.

It should have come with some sort of dvd player software installed.

Are you sure it didn't come with WinDVD?

Yes, I think I'm sure it doesn't.

I have a legal copy of CyberDVD here (new CD with CD-key). Let me know if you want it and I'll send it out.

I think VLC might be able to play your content. It is free.

Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and various other flavors, too.

Windows Media Player 10 features DVD playback. I don't normally use it, just use Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Actually it doesn't. You still need DVD codecs before it will play back a DVD.

Once the Codec is installed it works.

To make things even dumber: WindowsXP Media Center edition can't even play back a DVD without a third part DVD player codec.

Something I haven't tried but just recently found, the DScaler codec:

The reason I asked is because all my Dell Notebooks with DVD-ROMs (actually, all 3 that I've purchased have combo drives) have all come with some sort of DVD player software. (they also all came with some sort of cd-rw software as well.)

If you have the CDs that came with it, there should be something, but it should have been installed. Typically, it's windvd. Perhaps they are shipping one of the sonic players now. I'm not really sure.

Even if you purchased an external dvd-rom drive, it should have come with some sort of dvd player software.

You can buy a dvd playback codec for around $15 from sonic. It should work with wm9 and wm10.
