Hello, Anyone out there that controls a network at a school, business, or such? In another thread, we FT'rs have used our home or work based pc's/laptops to use idle processor time to try to develop medical breakthroughs, or possibly new medicines. It's a background program called Folding@Home from Stanford University; here's the website for details - http://folding.stanford.edu/ If you want to see how our 8 FT'rs are doing, go to statistics and type in team # 39124. We currently have 22 computers from 8 Flyertalkers that have done about 350 work units - not bad. Yet I hope it's just a beginning!
Ok, so why network administrators? You are the homeruns for us! Everyone in so far controls no more than 8 pc's. Someone out there reading this controls tens or hundreds of pc's, that probably sit idly for 50% of their worklife. So, let's put 'em to good use. All we need are a few IT/IS guys who make the decisions on some big networks to decide to do this. Anyone in?
If so, download the software, and configure it to be for team # 39124. Resist the pleas from other so called "better organized groups" on this board to join them!! We don't need fancy graphs, we need a true Flyertalker team! In case you want to see the original thread that got this going, here it is: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthrea...t=folding+home

Don't worry Steve. I've already gotten the message that there's no interest in having Team Flyertalk merge with another composite team. (Silence is telling, isn't it?)

We've only been at it for a couple of months and already we've made the top 5%. Why not join the FT team and put your CPU to good use? The application is very good about "getting out of the way" when you want to get real work done. Heck, by default, it even knows if you're using a laptop on battery power and shuts down to help conserve your battery until your back on AC power.

Either direction, same destination
Guys, don't want my comments about other teams to be taken out of the light hearted means they were meant. There are countless teams listed, many of which you probably have some relationship with (schools, companies, heck I even google a bunch so that'd make sense too). I just wanted to have a strong FT team vs others, as we all seem to log onto this site pretty regularly.
Either way, any contribution, for any team is just great. No offense intended.

Any High School or College Computer Folks?
Making one further attempt to attract someone who has access to a network of computers - an IT or IS professional, who might sign up! See lots of schools in the big overall ranking, so hoping someone out there reading tonight is the right one. Check out the progress so far.

Folding is a noble effort that I have been well aware of for some time. SETI is another one.
However, no business network that I have ever been associated with would ever allow "unmonitored" third-party use of their resources, no matter how noble the cause. There are simply too many extraneous security and liability issues involved. I have already seen SETI removed from many PCs that users "donated" to the cause.
But, thanks for the suggestion and keep up your good work! ^

BTW, we're now up to 14 Flyertalkers for team #39124, so check us out!
