Question Realtime flight maps?

Hello FT'rs!

I know I have seen an interactive map that will show all commercial flights both inbound & outbound into various US airports. As I recollect, by placing the cursor on a plane's icon, you could see it say "AA495, 37,523', heading 217, airspeed 555mph", etc. I even think it gave inbound time to arrival, etc. I would love to see this. Perhaps it was from some airline's webpage, or some travel agency site like expedia?

The other possibility is that I am remembering a tour I got of the Memphis FAA tower, with all their options there. BTW, it was not near as antiquated as I expected.... color monitors & the like! I was expecting to see amber monitors & aging equipment, and at least superficially it looked OK. In actuality, I guess the opposite is true.... anyone stranded on AA recently?!

Anyhow, I love interactive maps, one of my favorites is the intellicast weather maps: http://www.intellicast.com/Local/USN...=none&pid=none Anyone who has any good ones like this or what I'm inquiring, pass them along! Why do I have a hunch it'll be here in 12 hours or less??!! @:-)

Thanks in advance.

FlightExplorer AV Web Edition gives you, iirc, 10 hours of live FAA data for $10.00/month. It's very cool. And very easy to get wrapped up and blow way through the hours ceiling. Read their FAQ.

There are a couple of programs that show all flights on a world map

One is the Star Alliance screensaver (but only shows Star Alliance flights, naturally).

Another one was one of the 'beta testers wanted' programs that was posted on Ft (by FT) over the last couple of days and can be found here.

http://www.gate52.com/livetraffic.html gets you a few airports with this detailed data, live.

Although it is currently showing a jet at 52,700 ft

The webpage, www.flytecomm.com/cgi-bin/trackflight, shows the flight's location and weather including the position and speed, but it is at that time only. There was one that showed geographical location AND it changed as the time progressed as shown in Flight Tracker. The other one listed above is pretty good but not willing to pay for that kind of service just to know where someone's flight is on an infrequent basis.
Also just as CPRich indicated above, http://www.passur.com/sites.htm, gets you to the same place in one click. There, you can also look at replays with more information such as airline flight number, origin, destination and altitude. This kinds of information can be seen for a plane that is within 80 mile radius of the airport chosen.
Hope this helps.

HJ

Hah! And people laughed at me when I said I had a US Air ticket that said I was in Concorde Class. Maybe they will start using Concorde on PHL-LAS.

I have downloaded the KLM/NW timetable and that has a really cool option where you can see all the scheduled flights of the alliance including position, flight numbers etc. on a world map. You can have it running in real time or you can speed it up and watch the flights take the kind of time to cross the Atlantic that you can only dream about

Download from klm.com

or directly from here

For tracking activity at a particular airport, the Passur system is great, although they have had to remove much of the available info due to security concerns. Too bad more airports have not sign up for it.

For tracking an indivdual flight in the US, I like Flight Tracker from the CheapTickets.com web site. Great graphical interface.

You can also use google to track individual flights. If you type in the carrier and the flight number, it'll give you the direct links to Travelocity and fboweb's links to that flight for that day, provided it's in US airspace.

Thumbs up Thanks!

You Guys are great! I was away for a few days (imagine that?!),and now just am finding time to log back into FT. Very cool sites, I'm bookmarking now to find out which is my favorite. ^

Anyone else that runs across others, that's appreciated. The alliance link looks strong, but I fly mostly AA out of STL, so Oneworld is my natural choice.

Do you also help with kid's homework when Dad's out of town?!

Thanx again.

10k+ flights. It'd be cool if you select which airlines you want to see.

I've installed this and it seems quite cool. Does anyone know the meaning of the different flight colours on the map?

One minor issue - I would like to see the map when I'm using the PC rather than when I'm not... When the screensaver comes on, only my chair gets to see it...

You can go ahead and customize the flight colours if you want. I assigned something bold (red) to my prefered airline.

Very cool. I already had the Star Alliance version, but I think I'll stick to this one
