Download web-based e-mail?
I am interested in software to download web-based e-mail, such as found on hotmail.com, yahoo.com, mail.com, usa.net, etc.
About a year ago, ScottC and several others helpfully listed some such software in an OMNI thread. However, I was unable to find it with a search of "download web-based mail" in that forum, perhaps because of the system changes.
Now that I finally have my own computer, it seems a good time to install this software.

I used regular Outlook and I can download from Yahoo mail very easily. (Note: Yahoo makes you upgrade to one of their non-free premium accounts if you want POP3 access)
Note: I just went to the link http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net that was posted above. Apparently, if you use that with Yahoo, it is a way to get around Yahoo's charge for POP3 access.

I think this company can do what you need, but I'm not sure. Worth a look.

Thank you all very much for the input.
Now -- after I look up SMTP, POP3, and other dimly recognized terms from my past -- I need to go to www.cnet.com to look for reviews, comparisons, or user comments on these and similar programs.
I currently don't have mail software on my computer. I used Outlook while at DoJ, but I understand that is a fertile source of intrusion attempts. (I will certainly check the security aspect out, too.) Also, I may be changing ISPs, and want to be able to get my e-mail from anywhere. Hence my preference for web-based e-mail.
This does seem like something many travellers would have experience in, though I understand even more have Outlook or its competitors installed when they buy their machines.

Thunderbird
If all you need is an e-mail client, have you considered Mozilla Tunderbird?
I use Outlook for corporate needs but for personal use, I much prefer Thunderbird (and it's free). Installation is pretty painless and it just works. Give open source a shot!

I use Hotmail and I use Yahoo, both as web based e-mail systems, and as POP mail systems with Outlook Express. If I'm home when I check the mail on yahoo it takes if off the server, if I'm not home I don't take it off the server.
It doesn't have to be one or the other, you can pop and web many mail services, including both Hotmail and Yahoo.
