Both Motorola and Jabra make devices to let you get some Bluetooth functionality with a non-Bluetooth phone. They will let you get voice from your phone but I dont believe either supports more advanced functions like supporting the use of the phone as a GPRS modem. |
Bluetooth Headset
I'm using the exact same configuration (moto HS850 and moto Cingular V551). I bought the headset on ebay. It came with a non-us charger - other than that it has been great so far.

You can get it from select retail importers in the States, though. The Euro ones are black and the US ones are silver I think. Mechanically, they are identical.
It is bluetooth 1.2, which supposedly has better reception and faster connect times (I use it with a Moto Cingular V551). Mine connects very quickly and the battery life is decent. It has never lost a call. Other people can hear me just fine, as if I am using the mouthpiece of the phone. The only two complaints I have are (1) that, while comfortable, it is a bit large for my ear and doesn't quite securely wrap around my ear (small ear?). The other (2) is that I have to make sure the sunroof and windows are closed because the earpiece volume isn't as loud as I would like. Oh, and voice-recognition and one-touch button are easy to use, which is a big plus for me since I took the time to add it=n voice dialing for my most-used numbers. http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=819 Chris |
Cardo scala-500 on sale at Amazon
Wouldn't you know it. Not ten days after I buy the Cardo Scala-500 with a coupon at Buy.com for $49, it shows up on sale at Amazon.com for $37.99 (saw it on techbargains.com today). FWIW I am pretty happy with it thus far; the noise suppression is pretty good, considering I have a lot of conversations on longish walks down city streets.

My first BT headset was a Cardo Scala 500. It worked well enough (although I had to re-pair it every time I turned the headset off and then on again), but it was fragile. I put it in my pocket one day and it fell apart. The one I am using now is the Treo headset. Despite its name, I believe it will work with other BT phones. It's sturdier than the Scala and it doesn't need to be re-paired constantly.

That's odd. I only had to do the pairing once with the Scala.
Some of the finish peeled off, but it's still working like a charm ^ |

If you sit on your headset it will fall apart. :D I had a problem with my charger for the Scala, one of the buttons to release the headset from the charge poped out and wouldn't stay in. I emailed them and a replacement arrived in the mail 2 days later. Great CS and a quality headset IMO. eCost has deals on them all the time for about $39. |
My Scala didn't fit my ear right. It would kind of dangle about.
I gave it to my BF, and it fits him fine. He lost his Jabra about a week ago, so it's good we have the Scala as a backup. I'm thinking of trying the Jabra 500 whateveritis new one when it comes out this month. Has anyone heard anything about it? I'm switching over to having my cell phone service provided by my work, and so I have a Motorola V3 Razr on order as well. Any reports on pairing BT headsets with the Razr? |
Use With Multiple Devices
I just got the Logitech Mobile Freedom Headset from buy.com for less than $40. I specifically wanted to see if I could pair it with both my Sony Ericsson T637 and the Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter that I attached to my Dell notebook to use on my Vonage softphone calls.
Pairing it with either device was pretty simple, and switching back and forth wasn't a big deal. Getting the Belkin adapter installed correctly on the Dell with XP SP2 was more of a challenge, but they had good docs re this exact scenario so it wasn't too painful either. The quality in both instances is OK. I think it is better on the T637 than on the softphone, but there are so many variables that I don't want to jump to any immediate conclusions. I also have a Linksys USB BT adapter connected to my PC at work, so I will try it with that set up as well. |
I just got the Cardo Scala 500 based on the recommendations above. It sounds good when I'm wearing it, but the person I'm talking to gets TONS of background/white noise. I'm using it with Skype. What to do?
|
Well, my Motorola HS810 finally is starting to lose it. It works fine but I managed to smash it in my briefcase and when I forced the boom mike open chunks started falling off with painful noises as background sound. Probably what happens when small plastic items get 17 inch powerbooks stacked on them :(
In any case, I ordered a new HS850 today. They have them for $69 at www.blueheadsets.com |

It doesn't seem to be a Skype problem - works fine w/o the Scala headset. :( |
Cardo says the unit is defective. Which is great because now it's in France. It's going to cost me as much to return this stupid thing as it would to buy a new one. |
