I played with a P900 at 3GSM with the Blackberry client on it... wasn't that bad. I don't know how much more difficult provisioning is as they weren't clear on how the device PIN for Blackberries (NOT A SIM PIN or Phone PIN, but a unique Blackberry ID) is set on the SW devices. This is important to work with a current server or desktop redirector.

Does anyone have any experience with UK-sourced BB 7230's? I'm in the processing of buying one (from e-bay) and it was advertised as 'unlocked', but now I'm seeing that that doesn't count for much.

My company doesn't use BES, hell, we're so cheap, we just about have e-mail! Anyway, I'd like to use it for my personal e-mail (Tiscali/BTInternet) and I'm wondering if I need to do anything with my mobile provider to facilitate this? I'm currently using T-Mobile (UK). The BB was originally on T-Mobile anyway, and I have a GPRS account, so do I need to do anything else, or just go to a URL and set it up?

Sorry to sound like a complete novice!

My blackberry sits dusty an unused. I wish I could trade it for a Treo 600 http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/frown.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/frown.gif

As long as T-Mobile UK allows the use of the blackberry.net APN on your account (assuming post/monthly paid and NOT pre-paid) then it *should* work. Worst case, call T-Mobile UK, tell them you have a Blackberry, they *might* try to charge you a monthly useage fee for data thresholds on traffic via the blackberry.net APN (required as all email is secure via the Blackberry network back-end)

Thanks for the response NickP 1K

I received the BB today. It's cute..I like it, but I can't get the thing to work via GPRS on T-Mobile UK. I called T-Mobile and they said they had to add BlackBerry e-mail to my account (pay monthly) and that's all done now.

The device was originally on T-Mobile Germany, so could this be causing my problem? I tried to edit the browser settings, but all I can do is highlight them!

Cheers, David

David,

If you are using the "web" version of the Blackberry (not the "enterprise" version) then login to the Blackberry web client and have the "service book" resent, an out of the box berry or international berry won't have the UK settings in it. You should have received the URL for the T-mobile UK BWC from them. Otherwise call them and ask THEM to send you the service book.

On your Berry you should have "gprs" under the signal bar in the top right, is it in CAPS?

A "small" gprs means it has GPRS but NOT the Blackberry GPRS access it requires...

Cheers Scott. I just did exactly what you said. They've allegedly been sending me the UK service book since 2pm today. It's now 7pm and I still haven't received the settings!

The UK t-mobile webclient doesn't have an option to send the service books, or at least, I can't find it! Just out of interest, where is that option on the US t-mobile site?

Oh, it's currently gprs and not GPRS. I mentioned this to t-mobile. It turns out my machine is a t-mobile.de device, not a t-mobi UK device.

David

[Edited to add GPRS info...]

Ok, with gprs and not GPRS you'll never receive a service book, what you are going to have to do is install the T-mobile UK handheld software package, it's fairly simple to turn the .de device into a .uk device with that.

Until you get GPRS you won't be receiving any service books, this could also be because your T-mobile account still isn't provisioned for the Blackberry Data service.

pop over to www.rimroad.com otherwise where there are other UK users who can guide you to the software...

NickP 1K Mar 23, 2004 2:29 pm

ScottC is spot on... Did you also get a chance to generate the security key (random mouse movement)...

Things are a little more managable with the corporate server (BES) vs the non-BES, so any possibility of things may be "mis-set", if the device can log into the Blackberry service (via the blackberry.net APN) then it will go to "GPRS". Once this happens, setting up the device for mail will be easier.

Can Blackberry UK give you a link to re-download the firmware they support for the device. This will normally have the initial service book link to pick up the T-Mobile UK one...

Just moved to a new job where they use, ugh, Lotus Notes. The Blackberry no longer seems to wirelessly reconcile the "read" status with my mail server. Messages I've read on the BB still show up as unread when I log in on my PC. If they have a BES, not positive yet, is there a reason why this couldn't be done?
