Laptop Recommendations

Hello everyone,

I travel a pretty good amount each year and lately I've been using my four year old HP laptop. But the laptop is heavy and slow by any standard. So I'm in the market for a new laptop (up to $1800 or so), but I have no idea where to start. I need something easy to travel on planes with so rather low weight would be nice. I figure my current HP weighs around 8lbs. Also I'll be using the laptop for college. A built in wireless Internet card would be great too. Any recommendations on brands or models would be helpful.

Thank You,
Lance

Take a hard look at the Thinkpad T41. I have a T40 and love it. The T41's are shipping with faster wi-fi.

I'll second the Thinkpad recommendation (again). I wouldn't dream of letting my corporate users have anything else.

In almost all "Office Automation" applications, you will not notice a difference between Celeron & Pentium4 machines. The difference only comes into play in cpu-intensive computing operations that can take advantage of the larger on-chip cache.

Plain ignorance

I blame it on bad marketing by Intel. The Celeron is a fine chip for the consumer, it's perfect for gaming etc... and won't reach it's limits on any "normal" software.

Same goes for AMD chips, they are absolutely perfect for the home and small business user.

But doesn't AMD have a larger cache? I always thought AMD perfomed better than celeron at the same CPU speed.

Thanks for pointing that great deal out, Alan.

That's a model M5105, and is a great deal. I have the M5312.

The main differences are:

M5312 has a 60 GB HD vs the 40 GB HD on the M5105.

M5312 has 64 MB DDR SDRAM vs 32 MB DDR SDRAM on the M5105.

M5312 has built-in 802.11g wi-fi.

M5312 has the AMD Athlon 2400+ vs Intel 2.4GHz CPU.

M5312 has 1 parallel port vs M5105 with 0.

M5312 has 512 MB RAM vs 256 MB for M5105.

M5312 has 1 firewire port vs M5105 with 0.

I'm not sure if the difference in the two model justify the $450 leap in price for the M5312. But I needed to get the built-in wi-fi and firewire port, so the M5105 would not have fit the bill.

AMD's until recently always performed better than their Intel counterparts. In other words AMD Duron chips performed better than a similar Celeron chip and AMD Athlon chips outperformed a similar clocked Pentium 4. My understanding is that the recently released mobile Centrino chips are now the fastest performing chip at a given clock speed.
