Messenger Service Pop-Ups

Ever since I installed my broadband & cable modem, Ive been getting these MSN Messenger Service Popup ads that are driving me nuts.

They want me to go to www.ENDADS.com and get some stupid software program.

Is there anyway I can limit these stupid popups without downloading/buying any software..?

Thanks.

Step one: spend $50 on a cheap network address translation device (I won't call one of these a firewall) that limits connections to your PC(s) to those which are initiated from inside.

Step two: if you won't/don't like step one, consider the ramifications of having an unprotected windows box on a public network.

Step three: (w2k) start-->control panel-->admin tools-->services and disable the messenger service.

It's WINDOWS messenger service, not MSN messenger

Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Hope this helps, feel free to email me otherwise!

Gaucho, another easier option is this free and handy program:

But the firewall suggestion is a good one. You can't have a PC without a hardware firewall and have any sort of security at all.

I also use Sygate so when I am away I can have a decent software firewall on, for instance when I use wifi.

I think the best solution is to hunt down the spammers and do bad things to them.

If you do, avoid the current generation of the 802.11/b "all in one" devices from Linksys. They suck.

Look for a v3, not a v4 on these products.

Don't listen to me, listen to ScottC because he is a million times smarter than I am. I'm just a user type but he is a guru type. I'm here to learn!
