1) Why buy a Nikon when the first Foveon cameras are appearing. Don't know Foveon? Check www.foveon.com. The Sigma SD9 is a 10MP Foveon baby that will kick the Nikons ....
2) Canon had a 6.5MP camera though it doesn't use the Foveon system.
If you do decide you want the Nikon then Tokyo could be the way to go. The place is full of camera stores and most Nikon products. Price on the web is around 3300 though I'd assume most instore prices would be much lower. ( http://buy.zdnet.co.jp/pricelist.asp...30&ORDER=MONEY )
You'll need this though as most of them don't speak english. Otherwise there are several FT members that live there. The place to start is here: http://photojpn.org/

Great thread... Ive also been waiting for the Nikon D1 series to get higher resolution, more features and a lower price, it would be a great complement to my various chemical F's and all the lenses...
BTW, Scotty, that link doesnt work, now Im curious... is that camera series compatible with the Nikon F bayonet..?

Well, actually, it's 10.2 million photodetectors, "which are organized in 3 layers within the sensor to form 3.54 million full-color pixels." But this will still kick the butt of any 4-6 MP camera using standard technology.
from the foveon FAQ
Indeed, images from Foveon's Foveon X3 Pro 10M image sensor approach medium format (roughly 56mm film) in the quality of their results, even when enlarged to 40 inches.

Guys... I think I may have found something. There's a Kodak camera that appears to be a Nikon lens mount compatible but has much better resolution than whats availble from Nikon... 13.89 million megapixels.
I havent yet read the details, but for me the 64 million dollar question is how they define compatible. Today's SLR optics have so much electronics that true compatibility between lenses and camera body gets tricky. Things like image stabilization, special focusing features, and automatic lighting/color adjustments are only possible if the lenses and the body can talk to each other...
For details, check out:

So... after some more reading, here is the scoop:
This Kodak is a customt built Nikon, it shares some components with the D1X, and appears to work with most all Nikon components.
More details here:

Penncameras has the D1x for $3899. They are an authorized dealer. I bought mine through Mike Phillips. The price has recently come down. You may be able to do better but I have been very happy with Penns customer support.
DONT MAKE A BIG MISTAKE THIS IS TOO MUCH MONEY TO SPEND ON GREY MARKET GOODS .. grey market lens are fine but the camera has many moving parts my D1h has been in for service twice 1 week easy fast turnaround free overnight return ...IF YOUR CAMERA IS NOT A USA NIKON ..THEY WONT FIX IT !!!!

Several readers noted that Nikon USA has lowered prices across its digital SLR line. Effective March 28, 2003, the anticipated street prices in the US on Nikon's D100, D1X and D1H fell to:
Nikon D100 Set, including a battery, charger, cables and basic software: US$1700. This moves the selling price of Nikon's midrange digital SLR to within about US$200 of the going rate for its primary competitor, Canon's recently-released EOS 10D.
Nikon D1H Set, including a battery, charger, cables and basic software: US$3200. The instant rebate program on this camera has now ended.
Nikon D1X Set, including a battery, charger, cables and basic software: US$3900. The instant rebate program on this camera has now ended.
For the actual price you might pay for a Nikon digital SLR, be sure to contact your favourite pro photography dealer.
