Gigs on the Go
I've recently acquired two Iomega products for hauling bits around.
The first: A 20 gig Peerless Disk Drive. Very easy to take data around and provides an excellent way to backup the laptop. USB 2.0 is very fast! Price: $120 on Ebay.
The second: A 120gb external disk. This is my new "Tapeless Backup". I bought this because I've got too many MP3s and other things filling up my 3 home machines. I've got an old 4mm tape backup, it doesn't cut the mustard from a space and throughput standpoint. I've got the 120gb drive attached to a machine on my home network, and all of my machines back themselves up onto it 3x per week. This is a monster drive and is CHEAP! Price: $229 ($279 list, with a $50 rebate). USB 2.0 attached.

What software do you use for the automated backups?

Get a firewire card and drive if you are purchasing new, it's a lot faster then usb, and then you can get an ipod too to travel with.

That peerless system is quite nice!
I use a portable HDD (Fujitsu 20GB HDD mounted inside a case bought here in NZ) and it's quite nice. The only problem is my laptop doesn't have enought juice to power it, so I technically needs to have AC power fed into it.
When traveling, I use a 256MB USB pen drive, which has 'briefcase' on it that mirrors the server at where I work. It's a treat.

It would be very inconvenient to travel with an iMac. An iBook or PowerBook perhaps. Check the new 12-inch PowerBook. Awesome!

Is my understanding that Apple just rolled out a new firewire (Firewire 800) which is running at 800mbps, but I've only seen the ports on the new powerbook (no 800 peripherals yet).
