Apple's iPod now does Windows

Apple's finally wised up with their iPod: it now does Windows. You need to run MusicMatch and have a firewire card in your PC, but if you've been envious of the mac crowd's latest toy, envy no more!

Not as cool as the iPod, but a nice, cheaper product: the Archos Jukebox FM Recorder 20

Firewire cards by the way cost like $20 to $40, and you don't need to keep it in the laptop, just to get all the music to the ipod. Got my wife one for Christmas, loves it. The 20 GB came with musicmatch in the box.

Pricey, yes, but still great for traveling.

Windows iPod has been out for several months now, since last summer sometime as I recall.

Someone at work bought one of those Archos things reacting to the pricing, and took it back because it was such crap.

IME Archos products have been nothing but the worst crap you could buy. I first bought the Archos MiniCDRW when they came out 2 years ago at $199 a pop. Boy were they the WORST CDRW devices ever made.

Archos product support really sucked as well. I got thru ONE time, and every time after that I could only leave messages with no reply, and sent a ton of emails with no reply.

I've had the Jukebox Studio 20 for over a year, no problems at all.

Not quite as sexy looking, but far cheaper and perfectly functional (and with removeable batteries!) are the Creative Nomad Jukebox line. I have an old Jukebox Nomad 10gb, that I'm about to commit surgery on to put a 40 or 60gb drive in.

I have an Archos Multimedia Jukebox 20. It has an LCD screen and can play DiVX videos and mp3s, but the real reason I bought it is that you can attach a CF or SmartMedia adapter and take digital pictures straight off of the CF in the field, onto the hard drive. No need to bring a laptop with you on a trip to store your digital pictures. No problems with it so far. I have been updating the firmware every few months with their fixes.

I bought an iPod for Windows a couple of months ago and had tons of problems with the software and drivers - error messages that kept popping up on the screen and wouldn't stop until you turned the PC off, that kind of thing.

I returned it and bought an Archos, which I love. It isn't as sexy, true. But it is reliable, has great battery life, and a great community who have written their own open-source firmware that adds features not present from the factory.

Alan,

Are you speaking of Rockbox? If so, it is a great mod. Far superior to the Archos rom...
