Help with DSL connection

I’m staying at a rental house in France this week that has Orange DSL service but we can’t get online and I can’t figure out why. Any help is appreciated! The owners say that the people here last week didn’t report any issues and it’s not certain when Orange might send someone.
  • the connection uses an Orange LiveBox combo DSL router
  • logging on to the router’s web interface, it says the DSL service is active with speed of 10Mbps download and 892kbps upload
  • i can’t ping 8.8.8.8 from my phone. Sometimes I get an error that 80.10.125.137 returns “communication prohibited by filter” which leads me to believe the connection is in fact online
  • Sometimes, if I try to go to a website I get SSL protocol error/the remote host sent an invalid ssl response. Usually it just times out though
  • i have tried power cycling the router, of course

Im wondering if the filter it mentions is because something is wrong with the account at Orange, and there’s nothing wrong with the physical connection but they are denying service.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Couple of things I would check...

1st) Do a DNS flush and see what happens. (unlikely, but worth a shot)
2nd) Check the router to see if they defined a gateway. If so, record the address and blow it away. Then reboot the router.
3rd) See if there are any internal routing changes and see if there are any unknown devices attached. Sounds bad, but a previous renter might have set up a collection point of some sort that they didn't remove or reset.

Sounds like there's a captive portal like the hotels use. try going to NeverSSL - Connecting ... If there's a captive portal, this should trigger it.

Thanks both. It was an issue with the house owner’s DSL account. They called Orange and it started working.

Just curious, what sort of speeds are you getting on DSL over there? The only option CenturyLink has for my temporary home is 3Mbps down / 0.5Mbps up and those are "up to" speeds, so it'd be even slower than that.
