Web Hosting

I am thinking about creating a basic non-monetized blog to document my travels for family, friends, and other interested parties. I've had some experience with WordPress and plan to utilize it for this project.

Any thoughts on low cost hosting services, including the purchase of a domain name? My own Internet searches have pricing and features all over the place.

Thanks!

how technical are you to do things?

(eg you're ok installing operating system & installing wordpress/plugins/update-security holes/themes/SSL/DNS), or rather pay someone to do all the technical stuff and only focus on publishing pages

If you just want a blog why not use Blogger, which supports custom domains and is free? If you buy your domain through Google they will also handle that integration.

Fairly technical.

And I'll checkout Blogger.

I can't say enough good things about FastComet. Fast, knowledgeable support 24/7. Good, clean documentation. Check their ratings on Trustpilot.

I started with them last November for my two domains. Got a deal for $80 for two years of hosting for both. Some of their promos are for one billing cycle, but you can have a billing cycle of a year or more.

You can turnkey WordPress on just about any VPS provider for inconsequentially little per month, a buck or two.

Paid (or free) WordPress.com sites work great, and support plugins (that you probably don't need for this purpose) at higher price points. Basic custom domain site is $4/month, and is probably as secure as a WordPress site can be (IMO).

Anybody have experience with Bluehost or Hostinger?

I need to create a small business website (will probably hire someone to do the initial it up) and these two were recommended as easy to use with Wordpress and supposedly integrate decent email as well (I want email addressed to me at my domain).

I see google transitioned all of my domains to squarespace which I guess I will have to transition again.

Thanks

Bluehost sucks. They were bad even before they got bought by EIG, cant recommend. Never tried Hostinger.

Look at SiteGround. I've had it for several years for my business and domain email and have been happy with it.

Yeah - and that removed some functionality in the process

I moved mine from SquareSpace to CloudFlare. Pretty straightforward, but I only had a single domain.

I've been using HostRocket for decades. Are they the best? Probably not, but at the same time it just works. After a mention in the WSJ, one of our websites got 500k hits in one day and handled it.
