MacBook Air Longevity?

My 2015 MacBook Air is still working fine, but, I was wondering what is the average length of time these machines last??

I am wondering should I buy a new model soon or wait till this one dies.

Thank you

I dont think anyone can give you an answer without knowing your usage and how well you look after your machine. I am still using a 2016 MacBook Pro happily.

My 2010 Macbook Air is still going well in daily use as a secondary machine.

The only small issue I now have is that the MacOS is dated has gone through the full cycle of updates and cannot be updated to the most current version. Although security updates continue to arrive the latest iteration version of O365 will not install on this old version of MacOS (this commenced about 6 months ago) and so I am now running the Outlook Word and Excel versions that are about 6 months old and they are not regularly updating - not that it causes me any hardship.

Kinda this. Updates will likely be limited. Additionally, Apple will likely start trying to push people to go to the M1(x) versions. Then they can remove quite a bit of redundant code from the OS and vendors can also do the same. You'd still be able to use the computer, just maybe not some of the new features.

I'm tempted to have someone vacuum out all the accumulated dust!

A Google search reveals that the answer is 5-7 years.

Macintosh is not like PC, which Macintosh is highly software dependent compare to PC. So once Apple says this Mac is no longer supported by the latest macOS, it practically bricks the whole thing, unlike PC.

FWIW - a Core 2 Duo PC can still run using Windows 10, but not Mac.

It is more like 7-9 years I think, then about 2 years of security upgrades. But 10 years of laptop use is pretty good going in my opinion.

I was able to update the MacOS all the way up to High Sierra (2017-2020).

My 2017 MacBook Pro replaced a 2009 one too, so I reckon I get a good lifespan from them.

Sorry, but that's nonsense.

You can run older versions of MacOS on older hardware (as antichef has mentioned above).

Well, looking at the OP's question - the point is should he replace his 2015 machine or wait until it dies.

My experience is there are a good few years work left in his current machine!

I usually get 8-9 years out of my MacBook Pros. I have a 2006 MBP that still works fine with some software update restrictions.

The point is that a Mac is not "bricked" when it can't get the latest version of MacOS.

My oldest kid got a decade out of her Mac latop. Used it heavily. Replaced the charger a couple of times. The CD drive stopped working, and she didnt fix that. It was expensive, but I was very pleased with the longevity.

I don't plan to upgrade my MBP (2015) until it no longer supports the latest MacOS. In my experience Macs last far longer than a PC does. I am on my third laptop in the same period.
I'm expecting 10 years life in this machine which is incredible really.

Use a 2013 MBA for unimportant stuff like FT, still going strong, apart from the keyboard issue of that time when on a soft surface
