A Google search reveals that the answer is 5-7 years.

Macintosh is not like PC, which Macintosh is highly software dependent compare to PC. So once Apple says this Mac is no longer supported by the latest macOS, it practically bricks the whole thing, unlike PC.

FWIW - a Core 2 Duo PC can still run using Windows 10, but not Mac.
