You changed to a more expensive Verizon plan for a month and you can switch it back to a lower-priced plan?

Yes, that is what I did. I am not sure how often you can switch between them (and then back again) but it worked well for me. Again, not sure if you can do it multiple times in a billing cycle or for the year. It was a smooth process though I talked to someone on the phone when I made the switch (and then back).

I had Googled some poor reviews of the service provided through Red Tea Mobile, but figured, at $1.50/1GB or $3.85/3GB why not? And it seemed fine -- I didn't do anything bandwidth-intensive but it was perfectly acceptable for email, web browsing, social media, and Google Maps. |

Which eSim should I get if I'm planning on starting the trip in Switzerland, then after few days moving to Austria for couple of days, and again to Germany for couple of days before returning to Switzerland. Total length of the trip is 8 days. Should I get eSim from Swiss provider?
|
You need a regional plan that covers those 3 countries. Probably that will be a Europe plan that covers many more countries as well. All the main eSIM companies have those, generally they a bit more expensive than single country plans. Recently I have been using Airalo, Jetpac, Saily but there are many more.

Thanks for the ideas. I've looked at Europe Regional plans and I see: Airalo $20 for 5GB, Saily $20 for 5GB and the best one is Jetpac which cost $27 for Unlimited.
I guess we will go with Jetpac. |
Nomad are $14 for 5GB. Also they have a 25% off Christmas sale with code Santa25.

I guess we will go with Jetpac. You should not be paying more than $1-1.5/GB. Jetpac is not unlimited (max 7day*3GB/day =21GB full speed then throttled)... But if you know you only need 5-10GB, you should be paying at most $10-$15 First 3GB in 24hours data is unthrottled. Post that, data speed is capped at 1MBPS |

I guess we will go with Jetpac. If you have a Chase or Citibank cards, check the merchant offers for cash back. My.Chase card has 15% back and my Citibank card has 10.5% back. |
Update on WindTre eSim
I tried requesting a refund from WindTre for the eSim that never worked, didn't get a response. Credit card company made some excuse not to deal with it because it was an international charge, so I decided it was a live-and-learn situation and didn't expend more energy on fighting for the 25€.
Two weeks ago, the refund showed up on my card, a pleasant surprise.

Update on https://www.windtre.it/giubileo/tour...pilgrim-web-en promotion:
AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS. Paid the money, spent about 45 minutes uploading the ID through a link, filing out multiple forms, etc. Got an email saying everything had been received. Upon arrival in Italy, got an email saying there was a problem with the ID not being photographed on both sides, which considering the photo was of my passport's 2 pages with the photos and data, didn't make much sense. Could not reach WindTre by phone or email, could not find English contact info for them. Had to find a WindTre office in Rome, and the clerk there said the eSims never work, no one should buy them. My next move will be to file a chargeback request with the credit card company. |

Did you try any social media channels to try to reach them? I had some success with Vodafone Espana for a physical SIM, which you're able to recharge online with a US credit card. They have a fairly responsive Twitter account which communicates in English. But that may be an unusual thing, though some of these carriers may be targeting foreign visitors who are most likely to speak English if not Spanish. |

According to the staff in a WindTre shop in Rome, "the eSims never work" - they didn't elaborate further. As for the refund request, as they didn't respond directly to my request, can't say what the issue, except maybe they were just incredibly s-l-o-w in processing it, since I eventually did get the refund. |
